How to create custom shapes on a map?

I have a map visualization with a lot of data showing. I'd like to create shapes within the visualization that I can then save/export as a shapefile. I can do this in something like QGIS, but I'd really like to integrate this functionality into Spotfire. Is there some sort of workaround to be able to create shapes in Spotfire. I've used a data function to create buffer shapes, and that's essentially what I want to do, but instead of a circle or square based on other points, I'd like to be able to freehand create the shapes. Any help/ideas on where to start or how to do this would be greatly appreciated!
